Low Carbon Technologies will help farmers earn premiums for sustainability efforts

We believe beef can be a solution for climate change. That’s why we developed low carbon management practices proven to produce cattle in a way that reduces the environmental impact. Backed by rigorous life-cycle assessments and process verification, Low Carbon Beef delivers high-quality, environmentally conscious certifications so that we can all feel good about putting beef on the grill. Like other forms of agriculture, beef production converts natural resources like sunlight, air, soil, and water into valuable and nutritious foods.  Reliant on a constant interaction with the natural world, cattlemen and women are devoted to environmental sustainability to provide for our current needs without hindering future generations.  Current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can impact future generations and are an important part of sustainability.

There is much talk about GHG emissions from cattle.  Globally, beef cattle production generates about 5% of the world’s GHG emissions from a variety of sources within the beef production lifecycle, including enteric methane production, methane and nitrous oxide from manure and fertilizer, on-farm combustion emissions, and emissions embedded in consumed energy and materials.  Through continuous improvement, the US beef industry has become a model for reducing GHG through gains in efficiency.  But, there are still improvements to be made.

To be a part of the climate change solution, we certify beef that is produced with at least 10% lower GHG emissions than industry standard - and in some cases the beef production is carbon negative - by identifying high-performing cattle that are raised with sustainable herd management.
